• Dress for shoveling snow!  Wear clothes in layers so you can remove some clothes if it gets too hot.  Wear a hat, gloves and water resistant boots that will not slip on the ice.
• It’s always a good idea to warm up first.  Do some light exercises.
• Find a shovel that feels comfortable to you.  One that is too short forces you to lean forward; a shovel too long is hard on your back.  Make sure it is not too heavy for you.
• Like all good back movements, keep your back straight and bend your knees to lift the snow.  Don’t throw the snow unless you want to put strain on your back.  Lift and carry it to the place you want to drop it.  Push as much snow as possible rather than throwing or lifting.
• Shoveling snow can be hard work.  Take frequent breaks and make sure you drink water.
• Know your body!  Pace yourself and listen to your body when it tells you to take a brief rest.  If you experience chest pains, stop and call your doctor.
